Song writing is an emotional pastime, if that’s the right word? Though, it’s more like a ‘necessary task’, by that I mean, I literally have no choice in the matter, which is how it’s been for the last many years!
Times change, and for the moment I’m feeling such a good creative time, anyhow, it feels right for me now to go ahead and release each track for the album as I finish it?
Why?
« In the past I’ve spent up to 4 years completing an album! then, when re-connecting with ‘out there’ it’s like starting from scratch again?
« I’ve spent time recording more songs than necessary, then choosing the best ones for the album, sometimes I knew they wouldn't make the grade, but felt I had to finish them anyway? But then, yes, I was doing far more work than I needed to?
« ‘I know now’ what is going to be an excellent song, one to continue with, cos I’m in the flow of this time, and it’s digging me in the ribs constantly? I believe, there’s something about ideas that have a ‘shelf life’? Maybe they get passed to others subconsciously if we miss the moment? I can’t quite grasp the entirety of this thought, but it WILL develop, I’m sure.
Working this way, did help me grow as an artist, and to know how to choose the ‘extra good ideas’ - add this to me, growing as a studio engineer, learning more about plug ins, orchestration, playing piano, tricks of the trade, mixing etc. it goes on, you collect an armoury of tips, tricks and also what you already knew inside about any creative idea that jumps into your head?
In the ‘Let it go’ paragraph of Jeannine Ouelette’s post, ‘On Purpose and zero-waste writing-or how to finally finish a thing’ she says:
“We have to LET IT GO”
cos if we don’t…
“We are just robbing ourselves of joy. Of gratification”?
- This really got me thinking...
See her link to the post below...BUT WAIT A MOMENT! Please visit after reading and discuss on my post your thoughts?
Please do comment on this, at the end of this post? sorry its quite a long in depth dive in? I’d truly love to share and discuss with you or connect with you! Maybe you’re another creative of any media or even another songwriter?
Anyhow, this got me thinking of the ‘working for 4 years towards an album of 12 songs’ in that it’s a bad thing?
« While you're working on an individual song, you’re so tuned in to it, and you know whether it’s ‘a good one’ or not, it’s filled your head for maybe 2 or 3 months of hearing it so many times, all the intricacies of instrument parts, choices, etc, it kind of makes you so happy hearing it finally as the piece at that moment! I guess this can work for individual chapters of a book etc?
« While feeling that, isn’t it obvious to release it and be sending that message out at the same time, the excitement of it, the newness of, the amazing video/writing/pictures that transpired out of the blue, when you weren't sure ‘how on earth you’d achieve it’?
« Of course it is! Hallelujah! We've done it! A piece of excellence that is truly felt so deep down inside that it just MUST be shared ‘while in that’ ‘Excitable stage’ Otherwise, how on earth are you going to get other people to be excited about it too? Of course we want others to ‘feel’ that out of body almost ecstatic joy about ‘the thing’ that we are presently feeling?
« Joyfully, HEART centred, I go to sleep sometimes, and I cannot sleep ATM ha-ha! cos I’m so excited about sharing it with others! It’s on the wave of NOW that's why it feels so exciting, it is prevalent to this time in our lives.
« And of course, the other thing is, that once systems are set up, it’s much easier to continue with the next released track, and that excitement WILL carry it forward to wherever it is destined to go?
I’ve got a real good feeling about this I can tell you, with no doubt!
This is just a little explanation of why it’s taking a little longer than I’d anticipated, there’s all sorts of other systems that must be ticked off too, that I’d not noticed before? It’s a bit like Pandora’s box lol
« But the good news is, in the long run it will be an excellent system to follow for other songwriters too!
With the amount of work we put in, we need to put our boundaries around ourselves and our work, but also to work in the most effective way we can.
I’m a stickler for getting things done and done right! Maybe I am slightly OCD, and that CAN be a good thing!
I hope to see you very soon on the other side of the system!
AND Out of the Fog…
